Blog Revival Week – Motivation Monday

Workout: 2 mile run, P90x- Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X

Hello, my name is Phyllis and I have a serious problem. During my last 9 month bout of depression I have subconsciously self-punishing my self through by eating copious amounts of food. Due to this, I have gained ~15 pounds. Remember a few months ago when I opened up about my battle with Myasthenia Gravis and I said “this is a really hard blog to write”. Well, this picture is a REALLY hard picture for me to show…

At my all time heaviest I weight about 135. This was because I was taking medicine that made you significantly gain weight. Here I am, nearing my heaviest weight (aka, my deepest moment of depression). I know what a lot of you are thinking, “Okay, bitch…123 is my dream weight.” Well, at a measly 5’1″, every little pound shows. I’ve found that with my bone structure and height I’m best around 110 with muscles. Right now, though, I’m more stuff and fluff than lean, mean machine.

So, since I’ve been feeling tip-top, I’m back on the exercise wagon. To help give me some motivation, I signed up for She Runs Strong’s September Miles Madness. Here’s the deal:

  • Click on the image below and read the rules (I’m lazy and don’t want to post them all).
  • Sign up for a team – Team Ashley or Team Cait. I’m team Ashley, because she’s a AZ runner and I like to support all things southwest.
  • Every week send your team captain the number of miles you have run. At the end of the month, the team with the highest number of miles wins!
  • The winning team will win some awesome swag and you will have a chance to win a Road ID, a sports bra from Handful Running Bras, and a Clean Bottle!!

Back In Black

Look who got her computer fixed!!! (Finally!!)

I know everyone is soo excited and has been missing their little Philly. Don’t worry..In the great words of Brian Johnson, “I hit the sack, I’ve been too long I’m glad to be back…I’m back in black”

It’s been a long time, so much as happen. Here’s a quick recap:

  • I partied and cried hard at two weddings, including my brothers in Vegas.
  • Puppy Vegas was told he needed to lose five pounds and has since reached out to Jenny Craig for a multi-million dollar weight loss deal. Momma and daddy are counting on Vegas to take care of the family.
  • I’ve been crazy stressed and hence have been stress eating…wish I was one of those girls that didn’t eat when they were stressed.
  • I’ve been continuing at-home and outpatient medical treatment and are now FINALLY feel tip-top!! Now my craptastic body just needs to keep it up!
  • My thumbs are extremely sore from the month+ of only having an iphone to contact people.
  • I’ve been on-and-off the raw food diet…some weeks I kick ass and am 75% raw..some weeks I’m lucky I get an apple in.
  • I’ve been deeply obsessed with all things Olympics. There are so many inspiration and touching moments.  Best moment of the Olympics, thus far…When they announced Phyllin Phat’s computer got fixed during a tennis match.

Thanks Will and Kate, I’ve missed you too. Cheers

That’s about it…I’m just happy to be back and glad to be connected back to the 21st Century.

Power of the iPhone

This little guy did a naughty thing

He “accidentally” knocked my laptop off the table and broke the charger port. So my computer will not charge, therefore not turn on. He sure does feel bad about it though.

Through the power of the iPhone and the glorious wordpress app, I am able to write this unimportant, unnecessary blog! Thank you Steve Jobs!!

I hope I’ll be able to get my laptop up and running soon. If not, looks like Vegas will have to go to work and start financially contributing to the family.

Eatin’ Raw–Monday

Workout: P90X Chest and Back

Since starting my journey into raw food, I’ve been consistently asked…”So, what do you actually eat? No, really..what the f**k do you eat?”. ; So, for the next week I’m going to document what I actually eat.

Breakfast: Apple and Banana, Warm water with Lemon (not sure of the exact temp, so this may not be so raw).

Lunch: Raw Caesar Salad. Here’s the recipe:

- Make salad base of romaine, spinach, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, diced red bell peppers, basil, carrots, fresh ground pepper.

- In food processer, blend four celery stalks, 1/4 cup of cold pressed olive oil, 1/4 cup of Bragg’s liquid aminos, 1 garlic clove, half the juice of a lemon, dash of pink Himalayan salt, fresh ground pepper. Add water if the dressing gets too thick. You can also add dates for more flavor. ; The dressing keeps for 4 days in the fridge.

-Pour over salad and enjoy!

Snack: entire container of Strawberries

Dinner: I’m not that hunger, so I’m going to make some guacamole with carrot sticks.

Question- What are you having for dinner?

The Raw Deal

Workout: P90X Chest and Shoulders, 30 minute bike ride on my trainer

So, I’ve been researching alternative medicine and small changes that I can make to my daily habits to improve health issues. For the past year I’ve gone on  2-3 week juice-only cleanses and always felt like it gave me intense mental clarity, increased energy, and improved my mood. However, one can not live on juice alone.

Through all my juice recipe Google searches, over and over I would read about the amazing benefits of a raw diet. Since the only thing I actually missed when I juiced was crunchy food and the motion of putting forks in my mouth (FREAK!), I felt like this might be the next logical step for me.

In January I started really researching the raw food craze. After a few weeks of just browsing through information, I started resembling Claire from Let’s Go on a Living Spree, with my piles of books, scratched filled notebook, and endless internet searches.

So here I am, on day five of starting my journey into rawism (is that even a word?). Eating raw is a simple concept:

  • emphasizes fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains
  • all foods can not be heated above 115 degrees

Rawist believe that heating food above 115 degrees kills enzymes that aid in digestion; therefore, your body has to work harder to process and digest the food (making you feel tired and heavy). Now if you really want to get crazy, raw foodist often believe that heating up food destroys the life force of the food, so essentially you are just eating dead food.

So, after much debate and a whole lot of reading, I’ve decided to give it a shot. I’m currently five days in and feeling great. I must emphasize that I’m not doing this for weight loss, but more for health (who am I kidding, any weight lost would be a serious added benefit). Since I’m only trying it for health reasons, I’ve decided that I’m not going to be hard on myself if I occasionally have a piece of toast or some steam veggies (oh the shame!).

I’ll start posting some of my uber-delish raw food recipes I’ve collected so everyone can start incorporating raw concepts in their daily life. Aren’t you excited?

Question – On stringent diets or lifestyle changes, what are the hardest habits/foods to give up?

  • Mine is chocolate…I’m a late night binger and my binge of choice is anything chocolate related. Last week I had the score of the century – found a bag of Christmas Hershey kisses in the closet, unopened and so delish.

Back From the Dead

Disclaimer: This is a sympathy free blog – please do not “ahh” or say “poor thing”.  I started this blog to be completely honest about myself, and this is about as honest as I can be. As much as I detest and hide this side of my life, it has made me the cynical (yet optimistic) person that I am.

If you’ve halfway followed my blog over the months, you’ve probably noticed I’ve lots of really great excuses for my lack of exercising and blogging. I come with you know, though, with a legitimate, honest betrayal of my whereabouts.

Many moons ago I briefly touched on my often ongoing battle with myasthenia gravis. Although I don’t typically feel 100% (I aim for 90%), my MG has reared its ugly head and has put me down faster than Urkele in a one-on-one match with Mike Tyson.

Since November I have been increasingly feeling worse and only starting really feeling better this week (but sadly still not great). MG is a strange disease; to the outsider you look pretty normal  (other than what looks like a lazy eye from your muscles being tired) but internally your immune system is at war with your muscles. At my recent worst, I could barely walk up a small flight of stairs and I struggled to open a jam-packed clothes rack at Banana Republic while finding my size.

Due to my weakened body I haven’t been able to be very active and self-conscious 13-year old Phyllis has overtaken my mindset. If you’ve ever had any issues or problems in your life, I’m sure you’ve probably experienced a “woe is me” moment. Well…I’ve been deep in this slump and haven’t felt motivated to log into the blog, read other blogs, or even walk around the block.

To combat my symptoms, I have been overdosing on doctor appointments and performing top secret IV treatments and at-home therapies. So twice a week I give myself a subcutaneous injection of immune globulin (solution of antibodies made from donated plasma). The treatments really aren’t a big deal…but I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster since starting them.

Although there have been times in my life that I’ve been extremely sick from MG, I have never felt more “sick” than the day I had to put up a Sharps container next to my coffee maker. There is something very unnatural about having a closet full of medical supplies and a half-filled refrigerator of medicine. On the positive side, these geriatric home accessories have helped me grow into not-so-young name, Phyllis.

Even though my body’s strength can get worst within a day, it’s a long, slow progression to getting healthy. Right now, I don’t think I could even run a mile….but all in due time I’ll be back in shape.  After months of these at-home treatments and a couple of IV treatments, I’ve finally starting feeling like I can start getting active again. However, this time I’m going to try something different.

From one treatment I acquired aseptic meningitis and decided that I can’t spend the rest of my life injecting foreign substances into my body (besides, there isn’t even room in my fridge for a thanksgiving bird from all the meds!! Priorities people!).  So, since November I have been researching some alternative medicine and am developing some ideas on changing my daily habits (I’ll keep you posted as I do them).

So, I apologize immensely to the few people that follow me…I hope you understand that I’ve been trying to deal with crap and my crappy attitude.

Weekend Review

Workout: P90X Plyometrics (oh, yah you read that right..I’m starting P90X AGAIN).

If you read my last post, you’ll remember that I’m a high roller in Vegas and was comped at free night at The Mirage. So we pulled into the fabulous Mirage, Champagne corks flew and I was overwhelmed by the outrageous number of “Welcome back Miss Phatty”’ greetings.

Well..okay, maybe that’s not exactly what happened.  So I had to wait in line like the average shmoo, and I didn’t get upgraded to a penthouse suite, but what I did get was early check-in. Oh, yah, that’s right suckers!! When everyone else around me was being told rooms weren’t available little ol’ Phatty got herself a room.

When we got to our standard, run of the mill, early access room Joe did his “I’m a baller eating carrots dance”

Then it was off to the strip to continue the high roller weekend theme. I forgot my sunglass, which was perfect, because I was at a shopping mecca. Within a stone’s throw of the Mirage are all of the top designers – Gucci, Chanel, Valentino, etc.  So, I stopped at picked up a cool new pair of Dior sunglasses.  I was really shocked at the low prices though…only $6.99, yes you read that right, Dior sunglasses for less than $10!!!

Joe was starving and really wanted to get a couple hot dogs at Pink’s, so in my best Jay-Z big money rap I told him:

“I don’t like it if it don’t gleam clean
And to hell with the price
cause the money ain’t a thang”

and we were off to Planet Hollywood to treat ourselves to a dog. Pink’s is a L.A. institution that opened a little shop at PH a couple years ago.  Joe has to go here every time we are in Vegas, which I’m okay with because it gives me a great excuse to pig out!!

Then we spent a WHOLE lot of time playing my favorite game in Vegas- Roulette.  I like to switch it up between video roulette, table roulette, and my new favorite way – Half Video/Half Table Roulette (I don’t know what it’s really called)..but you place your bids on the your computer screen and then the dealer spins the wheel. Joe knows that I mean business and leaves me be for my extended roulette sessions, that’s why I love him so.

I had one too many drinks playing so we headed to dinner and then my new favorite lounge in Vegas: the Rhumbar at the Mirage.  It’s SUPER cozy and the drinks are fabulous.  Notice how as the night progresses the pictures get fuzzier and fuzzier.

Then next day was a planned pool day, but a cold front came in so we did the next best thing..Stuffed our faces with delish food and gambled. All in all, I ended up winning back everything Joe and I lost the previous day and won enough to cover our booze and food expenditures.  Baller! Gotta love a free vacation!

All and all I must say, I enjoyed the High Roller lifestyle and hope MGM-Mirage welcomes my cheapass back again!

Birthday Greys

Workout: 1 mile stair climber, 2 mile run on treadmill

After a month of feeling “grey”, I figured I would do the one thing that makes all girls happy. Cue Cher from my all-time favorite movie “Clueless”…

Makeover Part 1 – Working off my Phat Ass. Headed to the gym for some much needed calorie burning. I’m definitely not a hiker like Diane, but occasionally I like to jump on the stair climber for a power trip.

I’m sure you’re wondering how a mechanical set of stairs makes you feel powerful. Well, two things..

  1. I imagine this is how tall people see the world. At a measly 5’1” I like to pretend that I’m Gisele height towering over the shorties.
  2. From the top step of the stair climber you can see the entire gym, much like the emperor of a small country looking out on his subjects (yes, you read into that right, I feel like I’m the Queen of the gym). It doesn’t help that a bright light shines down on me and in his best British accent Joe screams out, “Hear ye, Hear ye…put down thy dumbbells and behold the Queen.”

Makeover Part 2 – Wax it Up. Confession time, I have a serious addiction. Yes, my name is Phylli and I am a browaholic. I love to tweeze, pick, pluck, etc my eyebrows. When I’ve gone crazy my brow lady, Laura, saves my poor little brows from my self mutilation. If you are in the Phoenix area and need anything wax, Laura is AMAZING!! Check her out at Keep Calm and Wax On.

Makeover Part 3 – Disguise the Grey. Maybe my month of feeling grey has been my hair color seeping into my brain; even though I’m a young, ripe 29 (30 tomorrow) my hair is heavy on the grey! So, I completed my mini makeover with my hairstylist Damian at Snapdragon Salon in Phoenix. Poor Damian, he has to pretend that I’m funny, that he is interested in what I’m saying, and he has to blow dry my massive pageant hair!  But he covers my greys and makes my hair super sexy and sassy while entertaining me with his witty jokes, so I keep going back. Also, he’s an amazing artist, so you if you are looking for some unique art definitely give his work a try at Damian Creates.

Makeover Part 4 – Take Facebook Page Photos Of Your Transformation. NERD ALERT!!

Question – What do you do to get out of a funk?

Vegas Tips – Straight from Vegas (Part 1)

This coming weekend with the annual Rock ‘N Roll Las Vegas Marathon

Last year was my first half marathon (in Las Vegas) and I’m going to compete in the half again. I’ve noticed a lot of the blogging sites I read are going to be participating in it as well…so I thought I would share some Vegas insight for all those going!

You see, living in Arizona, I got to Vegas A LOT. So much so, that I have a 125 pound Bullmastiff named after the town. Although Vegas has never actually been to Las Vegas, he knows EVERYTHING about it…so here are our biggest tips and hints about Vegas.

  • I’ve stayed at almost every hotel on the strip and I’ve come to the conclusion that I LOVE MGM Properties (MGM, Mirage, Mandalay Bay, NYNY, etc) and hate those under Caesar’s Entertainment (Caesars, Planet Hollywood, Paris, etc). In general, MGM properties are more maintained and the rooms are nicer.  That’s just my opinion though.
  • For a comfy, CHEAP hotel look into MGM Grand or even Bill’s Gambling Hall.  NYNY just started renovating their rooms (much overdue) so I would recommend it once complete.
  • For a little more luxury, look into the Venetian, Wynn, or Aria.  I LOVED the Venetian – you never need to leave the hotel (plus there is an amazing bakery called Bouchon that has the BEST macaroons in the world)
  • Needing some pool action? Mandalay Bay’s wave pool kicks bootah, but it can get expensive.  I loved MGM Grand’s pool complex and Caesars (although its rooms are overpriced) has a pretty spectacular pool.  I’m staying at Mirage for the first time this weekend, and it’s pool looks pretty awesome.
  • NEVER PAY RACK ROOM RATE!!! There are a million deals to be had in Vegas…I always use this site to find/book my rooms:
  • Here’s my go-to-plan for booking rooms….I book the lowest price and the nicest hotel I can using codes on as soon as I know my travel dates. I continually look to see if the rate drops or if there are any new promo codes for another property, if so, I just call the hotel and give them my new promo code. Sometimes if you call the hotel too and give them a promo code, they might have a cheaper rate for you! Using this method, I’ve gotten rooms as low as $55 a night on Friday and Saturday at Planet Hollywood.
  • Senor Vegas is going gaga over the latest Pet Rooms at the Mandalay Bay, Flamingo, and Paris.  So, if you are one of those people that can’t even go to Target without your Lapdog, look into one of these rooms. If you are sane, you’ll just find a comfortable place for yourself during your vacation Smile

Mama Needs a New Pair of Shoes:

  • I’m not much of a gambler…I typically stick to the Roulette Tables and Slot Machines. I’ll leave the true gambling to Clark Griswold.
  • Last time I was in Vegas though, they had new Hangover and Dirty Dancing Slot Machines that knocked my socks off. No one puts baby in the corner, except if there’s a hot slot near the back entrance. So, if you have mild ADD like me…these are for you!!

No Really, My Bullmastiff Ate My Shoes:

  • Shopping in Vegas is AMAZING!! Even your typical mall store like Gap has specialty clothes that you can’t find everywhere.  Here are some of my favorite places to go:
    • Betty Page Clothes – In the back of the shopping maze at Planet Hollywood. SUPER cute retro clothes and funny t-shirts.
    • Las Vegas Premium Outlets – Only a 10 minute drive from the center of the strip!
    • Zara – AZ unfortunately does not have this kick ass store, so I have to get my fix at the Fashion Show Mall across from the Wynn
    • David & Goliath Tees – SUPER hilarious t-shirts at the Venetian. Plus, it’s right next to Tao, so you can browse the store and then score some great people watching as the girls slut themselves up to get into the club.

More tips tomorrow!! What do you want to know about Vegas (either the city or the puppy!)?

Weekend In Review

Weekend Workouts: One awesome 5 mile run and one 3 miler

Mr. Romance, my boyfriend Joe, broke his toe on Thursday so most of our plans for the weekend were shot. It’s funny when you tell someone that you have broken a toe, everyone assumes it was due to some horrific accident. So, what was Joe’s horrific event?

It was a dark, not so stormy night.  Joe and Vegas were playing tug-o-war in the TV room, when suddenly Joe threw the rope into the adjoining room. Vegas jumped up and sprinted towards the kitchen…with all of the excitement, Joe started to chase Vegas. And then….it happened….the stairs.  Out of no where, the stairs between the Kitchen and the TV room jumped in front of Joe and punched his big toe as hard as it could. Joe screamed in pain “WHERE DID THAT COME FROM……ARGHHHH!!!!….HELP ME!!!”

So after a day of overdosing on Ibuprofen and icepacks, I convinced Joe to go to a balloon glow. Besides the 1.5 hour wait to get in (there was an accident at the entrance to the parking lot) it was pretty awesome. All of the kids were dressed up in the Halloween best asking for candy from the Balloon attendants (is that what you call them?? or is is ballooners?).  When the Ibuprofen wore off, we went home and watched Scream 4.

Saturday I had a totally awesome 5 mile run around my hood.

I started around 6:30AM, so I got an awesome Arizona Sunrise shot! I usually joke about being jealous of my life, but this I’m not…seriously, you have to be jealous of this view!! So freakin’ beautiful.

After watching Scream 4 the previous night, I was CERTAIN that the Scream killer was chasing me. Once I got to the local Canal Greenbelt, I was 100% positive that he would jump out from one of the bridges or culverts.  I was tuned to attack mode and had my house key between my index and middle finger and ready to scream, “ACTUALLY, I DON’T LIKE SCARY MOVIES…YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG RUNNING CHICK!!”

My run was going AWESOME!!! My mile splits were the best in months!! I ended my run at my favorite grocery store, Fry’s Marketplace (be prepared to be jealous). Just south of my house, Frys (part of the Kroger company) created the Disneyworld of grocery stores.  Here’s the details:

  • Open 24 Hours
  • Free Valet
  • Fresh sushi made in house!
  • Bread Factory
  • The most amazing floral shop in the world!!!

  • Tortilla Factory
  • Chocolate Shop
  • Ginormous salad bar and take out food buffet
  • Asian food bar
  • Kitchen for private cooking classes
  • Starbucks, of course
  • Awesome produce department

  • Juice Bar (YES!!! I go here ALL the time…Half Orange Juice, Half Carrot Juice, please!!)
  • Furniture
  • HUGE health food section
  • Hand-Wash Car Wash
  • Wine Bar!!!

  • And a super romantic lounge area. Oh yes, Mr. Romance and I have had several date nights here. Juice for me, Starbucks and a pastry for him.

The rest of Saturday and Sunday was a bunch of randomness and mostly just lounging. Felt good!

Question – Did you do anything fun this weekend?
